John Hanley
30.11.1995 – 04.06.21
John Hanley, a talented and popular member of GDS Group, sadly died at his home in Bristol on Friday 4th June 2021. Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this most difficult time.
We understand that John, who had epilepsy, suffered a seizure.
John was a much-liked member of our Meet the Boss family. Fortunately, the feeling was mutual. Bruce Hanley, John’s father, says John very much enjoyed working here surrounded by colleagues and friends. We can, perhaps, take some comfort that at the time of his passing, John seemed settled and happy, in a team where he felt valued. He will be sorely missed.
“A truly unique individual who was one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met, an absolute legend whose memory will always be in our hearts” – Ali Arslan – GDS Group
“John was an absolute pleasure to work with and an even better person. He was unique, hilarious and considerate. He was the person to pick the team up when we were down. We will all miss John so much and work won’t be the same without him” – Jack Wilson – GDS Group
“John was the glue that held our team together, one of a kind and such a genuine guy! I feel honoured to have known him, worked with him, and laughed with him. We didn’t get enough time together, but I will treasure every memory” – Lydia Jones – GDS Group
“I joined with John, learned with John and laughed with John. He was a true gent and a better friend. Gutted we never had the chance to go to a pub quiz together, no one else would’ve stood a chance with the living encyclopaedia” – Sam Cooper – GDS Group.
“John made extra special effort to meet everybody in the office, and to make anybody feel welcome. Anyone who met him would immediately take to him because he was fearlessly, and unapologetically himself. I respected and admired that about him. He will be remembered if not for his silly humour and witty insults, but for his generosity and kindness. It’s hard to put words together to be honest, difficult to put everything into a few words. Quote from John the day after the Easter Party “Hey matey, how was last night? I hope you had a DUTTY one” – Kazz Singh – GDS Group
We have reached out to John’s family to offer support in any way we can. When the time is right, we will discuss ways in which we can honour his memory in the short and long term.
Of course, our thoughts are also with John’s Meet the Boss team. In times like these, it is even more important that we support each other sensitively and with respect, and we are both proud and profoundly grateful for the way all our colleagues & teams have responded in a caring and supportive manner. In addition, all GDS employees can make use of the bereavement support service provided by our Employee Assistance Programme. This important support service for all staff and immediate family members is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
